How much do you really know about the great ‘smoking cigarettes’ versus ‘vaping e-liquid’ debate? Actually, in our world there’s not too much ‘debate’ about which is the safer choice, but if you’re a newbie to the vape world, or if you’re still not convinced that vaping is the better option, please read on.
Facts about smoking
We already know of the strong correlation between cigarette smoke and cancer. Smoking tobacco changes lung cells and leads not only to cancer(s), but respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. If you inhale toxic substances like tar, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and ammonia, something bad is bound to happen.
Then there’s the whole stinky hair and clothes thing, yellow teeth and fingers and burn holes in your expensive leather couch and your cream-coloured area rug. ‘Nuff said.
Facts about vaping
Vapers, on the other hand, inhale vapourized e-cigarette liquid that consists of water, propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG), flavouring and sometimes but not always, nicotine. It’s the lack of tobacco smoke inhalation that leads most vapers to believe vaping is a much safer alternative to smoking cigarettes.
To be fair, e-juice still has some experts concerned about its health risks. For one thing, the whole e-cigarette phenomenon has only been around since 2003, so we can’t really say what kind of health problems might present after a lifetime of vaping. And while glycerin and PG are safe for oral consumption, we have no data on the long-term health effects of inhaling e-cigarette vapour.
Addiction experts are somewhat divided over the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool. Some, ourselves included, say if vaping the e-liquid of an e-cigarette can help a tobacco smoker quit, then vaping is a very good thing. Others argue (weakly, we think) that e-cigarettes may let smokers cut back but remain addicted to tobacco.
Which side of the debate are you on?
So that’s the crux of the debate in a very small nutshell. We made our choice three years ago, and we’ve never looked back. Maybe it’s time you did, too? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
